Three waste charge campaigners jailed

Three more campaigners against waste charges have been jailed by the High Court in Dublin.

The three defied a court order not to disrupt the collection of bins by Dublin City Council.

Brid Smith, the Public Relations Officer for the Dublin Campaign Against the Bin Tax, was given a two-week sentence.

Chrissy Heffernan, a 60-year-old grandmother of five was also given a two-week jail term and Karen Heffernan, the mother of a 14-month-old baby, was given a one-week sentence.

Further protests planned

Meanwhile, another demonstration against the jailing of bin tax protesters took place at Mountjoy Prison this evening.

A day of action has been called by the campaign at all Dublin refuse depots tomorrow morning.

It comes as the Acting General Secretary of the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union, Eamon Devoy, called for a 'breathing space' in the row, saying that all concerned should pull back to consider strategic options.

He also called on local authorities to resume normal bin collections to all residents and to stop bringing normally law-abiding citizens before the courts.
