The Dublin North Fianna Fáil TD, G V Wright has said that he exceeded the breath alcohol level when tested following a traffic accident in Dublin last week.
In a statement, Deputy Wright said he was involved in an accident which led to the injury of a pedestrian while he was returning home from the Dáil on Thursday.
Mr Wright said that the incident was a serious lapse of personal responsibility on his part. He said he apologised unreservedly to the person whom he injured and to her family. He also apologised to his family, friends and constituents.
Speaking in New York, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said he understood that Mr Wright was co-operating with the Gardaí and this was no less than he would expect.
Mr Ahern said his primary concern was for the injured lady and he wished her a speedy recovery.
