A 29-year-old Kerryman, on trial for the murder of his elderly uncle, says the killing was a 'freak thing' and involved no pre-planning.
Eugene Daly from Dooneen, Kilcummin in Killarney denies the murder of his uncle, Paddy Daly, in January 1996 but he told a jury in the Central Criminal Court today he had dumped the body in a disused well.
Mr Daly described himself today as someone who 'never hacked it at school', left early and retreated into a fantasy world of action movies.
He said his father, Seán, had killed his brother, Eugene's uncle Paddy, hitting him with a iron bar in 1996. Then Eugene dragged him across the road from the Kilcummin farmhouse where he lived to a disused well, dumped him in and covered him with stones, plastic and sand. He then set about a clean-up.
But he said his statements to gardaí which revealed a well-planned killing by both himself and his father were simply him trying to act the hard man like in the movies and he dramatised events so he would be 'busted' and imprisoned with his father.
It is ridiculous to think of two fellows in the country talking about murder, he said.
Seán Daly died in May 2000 before his trial on murder charges. Eugene Daly's defence acknowledged that he was guilty of concealing evidence and being an accessory after the fact but say he is not guilty of murder.
His trial is expected to conclude tomorrow.
