The Health Board has begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a psychiatric patient after he had gone missing while under the care of two nurses in Co Roscommon.
The man's body was recovered from the River Shannon near Rooskey last night.
He has been named as 40-year-old John Gallagher of Cresslough, Letterkenny, Co Donegal.
He had gone missing three days ago while being transferred back to Donegal from an appointment at a Dublin hospital.
Mr Gallagher had been receiving treatment at the acute mental health unit in Letterkenny General Hospital.
One of the two nurses escorting him was a student nurse.
The General Secretary of the Psychiatric Nurses' Association, Des Kavanagh, has said that it would not be common for a student nurse to be sent on escorts of psychiatric patients.
A senior Health Board representative has expressed deep concern about the death of the psychiatric patient.
Sean McGowan, chairman of the North Western Health Board, described the death as tragic.
