Gardaí are continiung to investigate the death of a four-week-old baby boy in Waterford following a circumcision which was carried out in a private house in the city.

It is understood the infant, whose parents are from Nigeria, lost a lot of blood and died later in Waterford Regional hospital.

Staff at the hospital contacted gardaí in the early hours of Monday morning and alerted them to the death of the boy.

In a statement, the South Eastern Health Board said it was the hopsital's policy to perform circumcisions only when medically necessary.

However, in Dublin, Temple Street Hospital and Our Lady's in Crumlin, will perform the operation for religious or cultural reasons.
