Man shot dead in Dublin pub

Gardaí have begun a murder investigation after a fatal shooting in Dublin last night.

Thomas Canavan, from Myra Close, Inchicore, was shot once in the upper body, by a man who fired three times from a handgun, after entering Cleary's pub on Sarsfield Road shortly after 9pm.

The gunman was wearing a motorcycle helmet.

Mr Canavan, who was 35-years-old and a father of nine children, was taken to St James's Hospital, where he died from his wounds less than an hour later.

It is reported that the gunman was driven away on a motorcycle.

The dead man had no known gangland or paramilitary connections and gardaí say that, although he had come to their notice over complaints of assault, he had no previous convictions.

Last night's gun attack was the second at Cleary's pub in the past year.

Last November, a 67-year-old man was injured when he was hit in the face by shotgun pellets.
