Penalty points for seat belts in August

The Department of Transport has confirmed that penalty points for non-wearing of safety belts will be introduced on 25 August.

It was originally hoped to have the measure in place for the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Drivers will be liable to two points, or four if the case goes to court, for non-compliance themselves or if anyone under 17 years-of-age in the car is not belted up or in child restraints.

The National Safety Council have welcomed the move pointing out that most back seat passengers still do not wear belts. Compliance is running at around 20%.

Up to last month 33,000 notifications of penalty points have been issued to motorists for speeding or driving without insurance.
