Rebels call off coup in Manila

A mutiny by Filipino soldiers has ended peacefully after nearly 300 troops holed up in a booby-trapped complex in the capital, Manila, called off their 20-hour rebellion.

The renegade soldiers accused the Philippine government of corruption and were demanding the resignation of President Gloria Arroyo and her defence minister.

After lengthy talks with government negotiatiors, officials said the rebel soldiers agreed to return to barracks to face military justice.

President Arroya described the outcome as a triumph for democracy.
