The State is to examine the possibility of purchasing Lissadell House in County Sligo in partnership with another body.
The Minister for the Environment, Martin Cullen, wants to preserve the historic building, which was the childhood home of Countess Markievicz.
But he believes the estimated €30m price tag is currently too much for the State to bear alone.
