RTÉ has reported a net loss for last year of €20.6m, and an overall deficit of €56m when non-operating exceptional charges are taken into account.
The figures are included in RTÉ's annual report for 2002, which was presented to the Oireachtas today.
2002 saw RTÉ put in place internal changes as part of its submission for a review of the licence fee.
While this was granted in December, the new licence fee did not take effect until January of this year and therefore did not impact on last year's accounts.
There was a net reduction in staff numbers of 250 in 2002.
There are currently 1,850 people employed in both RTÉ and TG4.
Forty-one per cent of RTÉ's revenues came from the licence fee last year while 44% came from advertising.
Just over two thirds of its expenditure went on programming.
The accounts also show that the RTÉ pension fund is €71million in surplus.
