The Minister for Justice Michael McDowell has told the Oireachtas Justice Committee that €350m is being spent on dealing with asylum seekers.

He said the introduction into law of the Immigration Bill is urgent and badly needed.

Labour's Joe Costello says that the Bill is being rushed through without consultation with interest groups.

But Minister McDowell says he will stay at the committee for ten days if necessary to debate the 110 amendments to the Bill put down by Mr Costello.
