The Taoiseach has told the Dáil that he hopes to have Mr Justice Barron's report on the Dublin and Monaghan bombings by September at the latest.
The Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny asked if Bertie Ahern would consider re-opening the Garda inquiry into the 1974 bombings following the publication of the report.
Mr Ahern said he would be prepared to do anything to get to the truth.
He described as 'extraordinary' the decision to close down the Garda investigation after a year, and to adjourn the inquests after death certificates were issued.
Socialist TD Joe Higgins asked if the then Coalition Government had not pursued the issue for political reasons, because they were afraid of what would be found in terms of collusion across the Border.
But the Taoiseach said he did not believe there was any malice involved, that was just the way they were operating at the time.
He pointed out that there were many atrocities occurring at the time, and the Gardaí may have been busy trying to investigate them.
Mr Ahern also said that he had floated the idea of a South African style Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate all such events, but had not received any support.
