The first eclipse of the sun, visible from Ireland, since the total solar eclipse of August 1999 is to take place tomorrow morning.
People in Europe who get up at sunrise (around 5am) will see a deep partial eclipse; for those in Belfast, three quarters of the sun will disappear, and those in Dublin will be able to see half the sun disappear.
David Moore of Astronomy Ireland says this is an extremely rare event, and is well worth watching. 'The Moon almost completely covers the Sun just before sunrise so there will be almost no dawn on Saturday morning,' he said, 'the Sun will rise, partially eclipsed, in an unusually dark sky and then brighten to its normal full brilliance over a half an hour or so.'
If the sky is clear, those who are up at 5am should find a place with a clear horizon to the north east. It will be another 2.5 years until the next solar eclipse is visible from Ireland.
Do not look directly at the sun or solar eclipse, and do not view it through a telescope or binoculars. Purchase eclipse shades or make your own viewing device:mreclipse.com
