The country's social workers have said they fear that elderly patients may die because 30 long-stay beds have been closed in St Mary's Hospital in Dublin.
Very ill patients are waiting up to a year for a bed and the Association of Social Workers told RTE News that the cut will cause great suffering and hardship.
Hospital management said it took the decision partly to save money and partly to allow hospital units to be refurbished.
