The American director, Gus Van Sant, has won the Cannes film festival's prestigious Palme d'Or award for his film 'Elephant'.
The work examines a school massacre similar to the Columbine high shootings in the US.
Van Sant, director of 'Good Will Hunting' and 'My Own Private Idaho', was also awarded the prize for best direction.
