Pope John Paul has celebrated his 83rd birthday with a mass in Rome at which he elevated four more people to sainthood.
The Pope, whose health has appeared to improve in recent months, was applauded by a crowd of 50,000 people at the open-air ceremony in St Peter's Square.
John Paul recently became the fourth longest-serving pope in history. He will celebrate the 25th anniversary of his papacy in October.
He has created almost 470 new saints, more than any of his predecessors.
