Zimbabwe orders journalist deportation

Immigration authorities in Zimbabwe have ordered the deportation of a journalist who works for Britain's Guardian newspaper.

Andrew Meldrum, an American, had a deportation order served on him last year after he was acquitted of publishing a false story.

'I'm being deported. I've been declared a prohibited immigrant. This is a vindictive action of a government afraid of a free press,' the journalist said as he was led away by police and driven to Harare airport.

Mr Meldrum's lawyer, attempting to delay his deportation, said she had a court order requiring Mr Meldrum's presence in court at 3pm today.

51-year-old Meldrum has worked in the southern African country for 20 years.
