A total of 680 statements have now been taken in the Kieran Keane murder investigation.
Limerick District Court heard today that the investigation was one of the biggest the city had seen.
The remarks were made during the appearance in court of two men charged as part of that investigation.
23-year-old James McCarthy of Pineview Gardens in Moyross in Limerick, and 20-year-old Christopher Costello of Moylish Avenue in Ballynanty are both charged with obstructing Kieran Keane and his nephew Owen Treacy on 29 January, the night Mr Keane was shot dead outside the city.
The court was told that this was a major investigation on which seven gardaí were now working full time.
The court also heard that there was a possibility that more serious charges would follow and that the DPP did not want to make any decision on the case until all the statements were competed.
Judge Tom O'Donnell expressed concern that the possibility of further and more serious charges was being used as a reason for the continued remand of the two accused.
He said the DPP would have to make up his mind sooner rather than later.
During the hearing the judge had to stop proceedings for a short time after a number of people gathered in the public gallery and shouted abuse at one of the accused.
The two men were remanded in custody for another two weeks to appear at the District Court again on 27 May.
