The Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, has said there will be no mass deportation of parents of Irish-born children.
He made his comments following today's quashing of an order by the High Court to deport the Nigerian mother of an Irish-born child.
The case was the first challenge to a deportation order involving a foreign mother of an Irish-born child since the Supreme Court ruled, last January, that such orders could be made.
The High Court found that the Department of Justice had not followed fair procedures in the case of Bola Funmi Ojo, who lives in Waterford, and that her detention was unlawful.
Speaking in Brussels, the minister said he has approved a memorandum for cabinet on the issue.
He said there are some 10,000 cases of parents of Irish born children seeking the right to remain in the state, and each will be dealt with individually.
