South Dublin county councillors have rejected a motion that the Adamstown housing plan be parked until an envirormental impact study has been carried out.
The motion was a key demand by some residents and councillors who believe there is not adequate infrastructure in place.
They believe that attaching some 25,000 people onto the hinterland of Lucan, already Ireland's fastest growing small town, is a recipe for disaster unless infrastructure guarantees are secured first.
Tonight's meeting of the council was extended to consider a number of proposed amendments.
