A garda witness has told the Barr Tribunal that he was carrying a revolver when he approached John Carthy's house on 19 April, 2000, the day before Mr Carthy died.
Garda John Gibbons of Granard station gave evidence that a number of shots were fired from the Carthy house after he and a Detective Garda approached it to try to talk to John Carthy.
Earlier, John Carthy's mother Rose told the Tribunal she recalled John firing a number of shots in the back garden of the house the day before his death.
The Barr Tribunal is investigating the shooting of Mr Carthy by gardaí at Abbeylara on 20 April, 2000.
