RTÉ's Director General to step down

The Director-General of RTÉ, Bob Collins, has announced his decision to step down in October, six months before his contract is due to end.

Bob Collins said since he was due to step down next year, the appointment process for his successor should begin as soon as possible.

He said prolonged speculation about a successor if he served out his appointment, and the kind of uncertainty which could thereby be created, would be highly undesirable and potentially damaging to the organisation.

The RTÉ Authority said it was with regret that it accepted Mr Collins' decision to resign, but said the organisation and all who are committed to Irish public service broadcasting were in his debt.

Mr Collins joined RTÉ in 1975 and has held a number of posts, including Director of Television and Director of Corporate Affairs.

He was appointed Director General in 1997.

Bob Collins has served as Chairman of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) Television Committee and of the Celtic Film and Television Association.

He was very closely involved with every stage of the development of Teilifís na Gaeilge.

Paddy Wright said it was typical of Bob Collins that this decision was made in the best interests of RTÉ and in ensuring a smooth transition to his successor.

The RTÉ Authority says it will advertise the post in the immediate future.
