ISPCC calls for better screening procedures

The ISPCC has called for adequate vetting procedures for those wishing to work with children.

Following reports that the Sex Offenders Register is growing at an average of 20 names a month, the organisation says a screening system needed to be put in place immediately.

The Sex Offenders Register now contains 338 names of convicted sex offenders.

The ISPCC said that the figures clearly indicated that was a significant number of people in Ireland who represented a real and ongoing risk to children.

On the basis of the figures, the organisation said it believed that it was imperative that child protection be a societal and political priority over the coming years.
