Loughrey evidence heard at Moriarty Tribunal

The former Secretary of the Department of Communications has been giving evidence at the Moriarty Tribunal.

John Loughrey said he would have been less than happy had he heard that his minister, Michael Lowry, had met one of the bidders for the second mobile phone licence during the closed period of the competition for the licence.

Mr Loughrey said he had had absolutely no knowledge of a meeting between Michael Lowry and Tony Boyle of the Motorola consortium at a County Dublin hotel in August 1995.

However, he said he did not believe that, at that stage, Mr Lowry could have had any information concerning the competition that could have been useful.

Mr Loughrey agreed that the meeting did not appear to conform to advice he had given the minister regarding contacts with the different bidders.

Mr Loughrey also said he had no knowledge of a meeting between Mr Lowry and Denis O'Brien in a Dublin pub a month later.
