Gardaí appeal for information on Dublin shooting

Gardaí have asked the public for assistance in the investigation into the gangland murder of a 57-year-old taxi driver in Dublin last night.

Niall Mulvihill died after being shot four times by a man wearing a balaclava at Spencer Dock Bridge. Despite his wounds, he drove off but collapsed at Dorset Street and collided with other traffic.

It is understood he was attempting to make his way to seek medical attention. He was later admitted to hospital and underwent surgery but died of his wounds.

Mulvihill was known in the North Inner city where he ran two pubs and managed the local football team and canvassed for Fianna Fáil.

He was also known to Gardaí for a number of years because of his involvement with gangland figures.

Mr Mulvihill was suspected of organising deals for criminals such as Martin Cahill, known as 'The General', and of operating businesses in Dublin as fronts for criminal activity.

Mr Mulvihill had been targeted by the Criminal Assets Bureau, which had sent him a bill for nearly €1m.
