Gun attack on Athens' mayor elect

A gunman has reportedly attempted to shoot the newly elected mayor of Athens, Dora Bakoyanni.

While Ms Bakoyanni was uninjured in the attack, her driver was wounded. A man was arrested by Greek police at the scene.

Ms Bakoyanni is the daughter of a former conservative prime minister. She became the first female mayor of Athens after an election landslide in October. She officially starts her term in January.

Police in Athens broke up the core of the November 17 urban guerrilla group earlier this year. Ms Bakoyanni's husband was killed in one of the group's attack.

Athens is to host the 2004 summer olympics.
