Thieves are reported to have stolen diamonds and rare jewels worth millions of euros last night from a popular science museum in The Hague.
The Assistant Director of the Museon, Bob Crezee, confirmed last night's break-in, which happened despite the museum's use of an advanced security system.
He said that the thieves had specifically targeted the section in the Museon devoted to diamond cutting and jewellery making, and that six of the 28 cases in its chamber had been smashed.
The museum has not yet been able to put an exact figure on the value of the stolen jewels.
However the museum's director, Bert Molsbergen, said that the jewels, including a tiara belonging to the Dutch royal family, were all well documented, which made them practically impossible to sell.
