New rules on Freedom of Information Act

It has been confirmed that sensitive Government records, which were previously kept secret for 30 years, are now to be subject to the Freedom of Information Act after a five-year period.

The new rules will come into effect in April.

It means members of the public will be able to gain access to material showing how and why particular Government decisions were made.

However, no records of any discussions around the Cabinet table will be made public.
