US diplomat shot dead in Jordanian capital

A senior American diplomat has been shot dead in the Jordanian capital, Amman.

Lawrence Foley, 62, who worked for his country's development agency, USAID, was shot by an unknown assailant outside his home as he was leaving for work.

The gunman fired several shots before running off. Security was immediately tightened at the United States embassy.

It is believed to be the first time a Western diplomat has been murdered in Jordan, which is one of Washington's key allies in the Middle East.
