Prisoner returned to Portlaoise jail

A prisoner who escaped from lawful custody in his pyjamas asked to be brought back to Portlaoise prison, half an hour after he escaped last night.

The 27-year-old man from Dublin – who is serving an eight-year sentence for burglary and false imprisonment - was being treated at Portlaoise General Hospital yesterday.

At 9pm he escaped through a toilet window in his pyjamas and headed towards the Dublin road.

However, the weather was so bad that he got soaked and at 9.30pm he knocked on the door of a house and asked the occupants to call the Gardaí to bring him back to the prison.

The Prison Service has confirmed that the man is back in lawful custody this morning.
