Irish abuse case heard in German court

A wealthy industrialist, Dr Ernest Andreas Lewicki, is appearing in court in Germany charged with sexually abusing a six-year-old girl in Ireland 17 years ago.

The alleged victim who is now 23 will be attending the court in the German town of Ulm.

The case is making legal history because it is the first Irish abuse case to be tried outside the jurisdiction. A Garda officer and a number of Irish witnesses will be giving evidence.

Dr Lewicki, who owned a factory in County Offaly when the alleged abuse took place, will also face a number of other sexual abuse charges.
