Milosevic trial enters new phase

The war crimes trial of the former Yugoslav leader, Slobodan Milosevic, entered a new phase today with UN prosecutors in The Hague accusing him of human rights violations during the Croatian and Bosnian wars.

Tens of thousands of people were killed, tortured or displaced during the conflicts. Milosevic faces 61 charges, including genocide.

The prosecutors closed their case two weeks ago on Kosovo, where Milosevic and former aides are accused of expelling around 800,000 Albanians.

Today, prosecutors alleged that attacks against non-Serb civilian populations in Croatia were carried out in a "systematic and organised way", and that the overall strategy for the attacks came from Milosevic.

Milosevic repeated his claim that the indictments are false and that the court proceedings are illegal.
