Singapore arrests 21 further terrorist suspects

The Singapore government has said that 21 suspected terrorists were arrested there last month, including some who had been trained at al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan.

A statement from the home ministry gave no reason for the delay in releasing the news, adding that a detailed statement would be forthcoming.

Today's statement said that nineteen of those arrested "are or have been" members of Islamic group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), and two are linked to the Philippines-based Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Thirteen JI members were arrested last December, accused of plotting to blow up US and other Western targets in the city-state.

The statement said that the latest arrests were made "for involvement in terrorism-related activities", and came as a result of the continuing investigation into JI.
