A 14-year-old County Tipperary Youth is fighting for his life tonight after what Gardai believe were injuries he received during an assault last Sunday evening.

The youth, believed to be from the Wilderness housing estate in Clonmel, remains in a coma in hospital in Cork and is breathing with the use of a life support machine.

An incident room has been set-up at Clonmel Garda Station and Garda confirmed their investigations into the incident are at an advanced stage.

The 14 year-old male had been in Garda custody after he was detained under the Public Order Act following an alleged incident at Gladstone Street on Tuesday night.

A Garda spokesman said that the youth was checked every half hour, which is routine procedure, due was found to have become ill yesterday morning.

Medical attention was sought by the member in charge, and two Doctors and a ambulance crew were on the scene within minutes.

The youth was then taken to St Joseph's Hospital Clonmel, before being taken to University Hospital Cork, where he remains.

Garda are investigating a possible link with an incident at Cashel Street, close to the centre of the town, when according to Gardai, an assult took place sometime around midnight on Sunday night and the early hours of Monday morning.

Garda have asked for anyone who might have seen anything in the Cashel street or Queen Street areas between 11-30pm and 12-30 last Sunday night/Monday Morning to contact them.
