The Palestinian guerrilla leader Sabri al-Bana, known by his pseudonym Abu Nidal, has been found dead at his home in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
Palestinian sources said that he died of gunshot wounds and it was not clear if he was killed or had committed suicide.
Nidal, who was 65, was one of the world's most wanted men.
He was the head of a group called Fatah -The Revolutionary Council, which severed ties with the Palestine Liberation Organisation led by Yasser Arafat in 1974, saying that it was too moderate.
His group was blamed for attacks in 20 countries against Middle Eastern, European and US targets which killed hundreds, including PLO officials.
A Fatah military court sentenced him to death in absentia. The 1982 attempt to assassinate Israel's ambassador to Britain sparked Israel's invasion of Lebanon to target Palestinian guerrilla groups.
