Missing girls: unidentified bodies found near Suffolk

Police searching for the bodies of the missing Cambridgeshire schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman have said they have found two bodies.

The bodies were found at Mildenhall, in the adjoining county of Suffolk, approximately seven miles east of the girls' hometown of Soham.

Police said the bodies had been found by a member of the public at around one o'clock this afternoon. It is not confirmed that the bodies are those of the girls who disappeared 13 days ago.

The discovery was made almost twelve hours after police arrested a 28-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman. Police sources named those arrested as caretaker, Ian Huntley, and his girlfriend, Maxine Carr.

Mr Huntley has been arrested on suspicion of abducting and murdering Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells.

Ms Carr has been arrested on suspicion of murdering the girls.

Police have until 4am tomorrow morning to decide whether to charge the couple or extend their time in custody.

The policeman heading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Any Hebb, made a statement to reporters shortly after 8am this morning. The statement was the first time police said they believed the girls were dead.

It follows police questioning of Mr Huntley and Ms Carr for more than seven hours yesterday. A search of the couple's house is being carried out in Soham.

Police say they have recovered items of major importance from Soham College. Searches are continuing around the college as well as at the girls' primary school and Mr Huntley's caretaker's cottage.

Searches are also going on in the house of Mr Huntley's father in the town of Littleport, a few miles north of Soham.
