Afghan leader assassination attempt foiled

The authorities in Afghanistan say they have foiled a possible attempt to assassinate President Hamid Karzai and members of his cabinet.

Officials are reported to have said that Afghan security forces arrested two men suspected of being linked to al-Qaeda who were planning to carry out the assassinations.

It is reported they were detained in Kabul when their car, packed with explosives, was involved in a road accident.

Just over three weeks ago, gunmen killed the Afghan Vice President, Hajiq Adir, as he was being driven away from his offices in Kabul.
