French police say the man who fired a gun as President Jacques Chirac passed in an open top car during the Bastille celebration in Paris today had intended to kill him.
Police were alerted by cries of alarm from members of the crowd who saw the man pulling a rifle from a guitar case.
The 25-year-old claims to be a member of a far right neo nazi student group that has used violence in the past to convey its message.
