IBTS chief Hynes' suspension lifted

The Chief Executive Officer of the Blood Bank has secured an interim order in the High Court, lifting the suspension imposed on him by his board last Friday. Martin Hynes also secured an interim order, which restrains the board from hearing any further complaint made against him.

The orders were made by Mr Justice Thomas Smyth, following an application by Brain O'Moore, SC, on Mr Hynes' behalf.

The matter will come back to the High Court on Monday, unless the Blood Bank applies for an earlier hearing. Mr Hynes was suspended over a row with the Munster Regional Director, Dr Joan Power.

The Board of the Blood Transfusion Service is holding talks with the Munster Regional Director, Dr Joan Power, following a meeting with the National Medical Director, Dr Willie Muphy, earlier today.

The Board commenced the meeting at 9.00am at its headquarters beside St James' Hospital in Dublin. The purpose is to examine the role of Dr Murphy, who had a dispute with Dr Power earlier this month.

The row centred on Dr Power's refusal to hand over to Dr Murphy a number of files relating to people who were diagnosed as having contracted Hepatitis C but not informed for more than two years. Dr Power is due to go before the Board this afternoon.
