Flanagan honoured on Queen's Jubilee list

The former Chief Constable of the North's police service, Sir Ronnie Flanagan, has been honoured in the latest Birthday's Honours list from the Queen.

Sir Ronnie becomes the first person from Northern Ireland to be given the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire. The Honour is the highest British civil honour which can be bestowed.

Former North Belfast Unionist MP, Cecil Walker, and the recently retired Environment Minister, Sam Foster, have been given CBEs.

Other people to be honoured in this year's list include the Newcastle and former England team manager, Bobby Robson, and the Rolling Stones star, Mick Jagger, both of whom have received knighthoods.

Another knighthood, for the Indian food entrepreneur and millionaire, Gulam Noon, who has given more than £100,000 to the Labour Party, has provoked some controversy. However, Downing Street has insisted the donations did not influence the award, which was approved by the all-party Honours Scrutiny Committee.

The playwright, Harold Pinter, the Poirot actor, David Suchet and the former presenter of BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Sue MacGregor, also received accolades.
