New York mafia boss Gotti dies of cancer

New York mafia boss John Gotti, known as the Teflon Don, has died of throat cancer in a prison hospital in Springfield, Missouri. He was 61.

The head of New York's notorious Gambino crime family was convicted in 1992 of murder, extortion and obstruction of justice. He was sentenced to 100 years in prison. He had been battling cancer since 1998.

Gotti died a week after US prosecutors in New York indicted his brother, Peter Gotti, and more than a dozen other alleged mobsters on extortion and corruption charges related to waterfront operations.
