Mandela calls for Lockerbie bomber move

The former South African president, Nelson Mandela, has called on Britain to allow the Libyan convicted of the Lockerbie bombing to serve his life sentence in a Muslim country. He also said there should be a fresh appeal against his conviction.

Mr Mandela was speaking in Glasgow after meeting Abdel Basset al-Megrahi in the city's Barlinnie Prison.

Megrahi was convicted of murder last year for smuggling a bomb aboard Pan Am flight 103, which exploded over the town of Lockerbie on 21 December 1988, killing 270 people.

Mr Mandela said he would seek talks with the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and the US President, George W. Bush.
