Irish mobile phone users sent half a billion text messages in the first 3 months of this year, with the average user sending 62 text messages per month.
This is a massive 70% increase on the same period last year.
The quarterly survey from the Telecoms Regulator has confirmed that Ireland is one of the most lucrative countries for mobile phone companies to operate in.
Of the 16 European countries surveyed, Irish customers spend more per month than everywhere other than Switzerland.
77% of people in Ireland now own a mobile phone, the seventh highest penetration rate in Europe.
02, formerly known as Digifone, has increased its market share by 1% to 40%; Vodafone's share is unchanged at 57%; and Meteor has only 3% of the market.
