Police in the Netherlands say they have arrested a man in connection with today's assassination of the right wing politician, Pim Fortuyn, who was gunned down in a car park in Hilversum shortly after giving a radio interview.
Mr Fortuyn had been hit six times in the neck and the chest. Police say the suspect in custody is a male Dutch national, but they have not released his name.
The Dutch Prime Minister, Wim Kok, said he was astonished and deeply shocked over the murder.
Mr Fortuyn was standing in the country's general election - due to take place next week - on a largely anti-immigrant platform.
