A 19-year-old man has appeared before the Dublin District Court charged with seven burglaries and car thefts on the day two Gardaí died. Paul Barrett, an unemployed man with no fixed abode, was charged with stealing four cars, two burglaries and breaking into a car.

The value of the stolen property is over €15,000 and he was remanded in custody till next Monday. The charges relate to the morning of 14 April, the day two Gardaí, Tony Tighe and Michael Padden, were killed in a car crash.

The man was detained at Blackrock Garda station overnight. Just after seven o’clock last night, Superintendent Kevin Donoghue, the officer leading the investigation, directed that the teenager be charged with five car thefts and two burglaries. All the offences are alleged to have taken place in Blackrock and Dalkey.
