Psychiatrists call for 'Yes' vote in referendum

Two of the country's leading psychiatrists, Anthony Clare and Patricia Casey, have said that no evidence can be found to show unequivocally that refusing an abortion leads to suicide. They have urged a 'Yes' vote in the forthcoming referendum.

But a leading authority on suicide has rejected the Government's proposal to rule out the threat of suicide as grounds for an abortion. Dr John Connolly said that it was "disgraceful" because it marginalised people with psychiatric illnesses.

Earlier, the Referendum Commission confirmed that it would not be able to deliver information booklets on the abortion referendum to every household in the country. But in a statement, the Commission said that alternative means of distribution were under consideration to make the booklet as widely available as possible, as well as running radio and television information campaigns.
