Afghan refugees offered compensation to return

The Australian government has offered to pay Afghan refugees interned in controversial detention centres to return home. The asylum seekers have been offered financial aid to return home and resettle, now that the Taliban is no longer in power.

This decision follows domestic and international criticism of Australia's immigration system, particularly its handling of a two-week hunger strike in Woomera detention centre.

With up to 4,000 Afghan asylum seekers in Australia, it is feared that unrest would continue at Woomera and other detention centres if the government did not quickly fulfil its promises.

Over 800 asylum seekers detained in Woomera detention camp had been on hunger strike until yesterday in a protest against conditions and the lengthy asylum claim process.
