Lockerbie appeal begins in Netherlands

A special court in the Netherlands has begun hearing an appeal by a Libyan who was jailed for life for the Lockerbie bombing.

The appeal, like the original trial, is being conducted under Scottish law at a former military base near Utrecht.

Lawyers for Abdel Basset al-Megrahi say fresh evidence has emerged that casts doubt on his guilt. Al-Megrahi was convicted last January for his part in the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 in December 1988, in which 270 people were killed.
