Palestinian gunman opens fire in shopping district

More than a dozen people were wounded in Jerusalem today when a Palestinian gunman opened fire in a crowded shopping district. The gunman, thought to belong to Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction, was then shot dead by Israeli police.

Earlier, the militant Islamic group, Hamas, vowed total war against Israel after four of its members were killed this morning in an Israeli raid in the West Bank town of Nablus.

They were killed during what Israeli military sources described as a "targeted operation". Nine others were arrested. This shooting happened as Israeli forces began a withdrawal from the Palestinian-ruled city of Tulkarem, which they entered yesterday.
