Rallies to coincide with North work stoppage

A series of rallies have been planned in Belfast, Derry, Enniskillen and Omagh for tomorrow, when a half day work stoppage is due to take place across Northern Ireland.

The action is in protest at the Sectarian murder of the postman Danny McColgan last weekend, and the subsequent death threats against teachers and postal workers. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions wants the stoppage to begin at mid-day.

Postal delivery services in the North returned to normal today.

All mail had been halted since the killing of Mr McColgan, who was a Catholic, on Saturday. The Loyalist paramilitary group, the Red Hand Defenders, claimed responsibility for the murder.

The Red Hand Defenders is a cover name used by members of the UFF and the LVF. Union officials recommended a return to work after a meeting yesterday with a senior police officer.
